There was a time not that many years ago when we could safely go out and leave our homes unlocked. Those days and long gone and today we have deadlocks and security cameras, burglar alarms and motion sensors on our outside lights. The same has happened on the Internet. At first it was only the most technical of computer users who were accessing the Internet. Today there are so many Internet servers, portals and home computers that the security requirements have escalated. We need to see more protection for ourselves and our epic novel now than ever before.

The protection of our computer often starts from day one where an Internet Security package trial comes as standard with most computers. Remember that once you have a home network every computer needs equal protection or someone will gain access to all the computers in the house. Don’t make the excuse we only have a router and share one printer, as that means you have a home network and all the computers must be protected from spyware, malware, hackers and viruses. An out of date virus scanner or anti-spyware software is a recipe for disaster, your disaster.

The same can be said of anything you are selling on the Internet. ClickBank is a great place to sell things but you must protect your ClickBank digital products or you will find that someone out there has stolen some or all of your profits. The worst scenario is that some of your customers demand a refund as they have found exactly the same product sold by someone else on the Internet for half the price. It does happen even among Internet marketers so be warned.

So you need to put into place proper Internet security systems so your book, music or design is not stolen by someone who wants something for nothing. Even if they pay for the item initially they may very well demand a refund and then go on to sell your material for their profit. Destroying their source of income may leave them annoyed but better for them to be annoyed than you, the author, be out of pocket. You can see where my loyalties lie. I only hope that when they are unable to supply the products they offer, that they are asked for a refund and their business is then blocked if they do not provide a full and timely refund.

You have keys to your house and pass codes for the alarm system but you need to have effective online digital security to prevent valuable information and research being stolen from you. Make sure that if you have some information available for access by other members of your household network that people outside the house cannot see or gain access to your computer. It is never easy to get the correct balance giving enough access for local use and not enough for the stranger who may be lurking.

It goes without saying that you need security for your eBooks. Do not send out copies of your eBook in text (.txt) or Word (.doc) format to the general public. Only give these formats if you are selling to someone or other rights to sell on. Always use Adobe Acrobat format (.PDF) and make sure that the security is in place so no-one can copy the book into another format easily. Yes you may still allow them to print the contents of the file but they cannot take the book into a word processor and edit it so that it looks like their own.

So when you see the police with “Protect and serve” as their motto, please remember that everything on your computer needs to be “protected and secured”.
